Causes and prevention of chicken pox

Chickenpox and measles are commonly discussed terms among the parents of children or toddlers. They consider these to be a mild disease which can be treated from home itself. Still, it is better to get vaccinated to prevent chickenpox and the possible complications related to it. Chicken pox vaccines have been proved to be an effective way to prevent it.

What causes chicken pox?
Chicken pox is a viral infection that causes itchy rashes with small fluid-filled blisters across the body accompanied by fever, cold and cough. It is caused by (VZV) varicella-zoster virus. It initially infects many tissues during primary infection and then becomes dormant which, later reactivates itself to spread across the body causing the disease. It mostly victimizes small children under the age of 15. Although the disease is not even close to life risk, it weakens the body and the immune system of the bearer. The chicken was a common childhood disease before it became a routine in the country.

What are the risk factors of chicken pox?
The virus which causes chickenpox is very contagious and has a tendency to spread. As it is a viral disease, the virus gets transmitted by the direct contact with the rash or the droplets of sneezing or coughing which burst into the air.

  • As it commonly occurs in children, one can get infected by infected children.
  • Every person who hasn’t been vaccinated for chickenpox is more likely to get it.

It is possible that a person might face this disease more than once in their lifetime. An already vaccinated individual may also get it once or twice but, their impacts will be mild and bearable.

Home remedies to treat chicken pox
Before scientists could invent chemical drugs, most of the diseases were cured by home remedies and chicken pox being a mild disease is even easier to cure at home. These are few home remedies that might ease the sufferings of the bearer.

  • Baking soda
A bath of baking soda can actually help to soothe the burning blisters and to reduce the itchiness. Bathing 2-3 times a day would help.
  • Calamine
Apply calamine lotion on the blisters with the help of damp cotton. The properties of calamine will help in reducing the chronic itching.
  • Wear mittens
Scratching the blisters may be satisfying but, it might lead to direct exposure of your skin to the infection giving you discomfort. To prevent scratching during sleep wrap your child’s hand with socks or mittens.
  • Sugar-free popsicles
Blisters may also occur inside your mouth which can be painful. Therefore, giving your kids or the bearer to chew on sugar-free popsicles will help to soothe the burnings.
  • Mild medication
Many a time, the bearer may also suffer from a fever which might worsen the conditions. Hence, mild painkillers or other medication help to relieve the parallel conditions.

There are many other ways of treating chicken pox but again what a vaccination will do nothing else would. Chickenpox happens once in almost every individual’s life. Therefore, it is better to educate yourself with the necessary information for the meantime.
