Dos and Dont’s of laser skin resurfacing
Due to aging, excessive exposure to the sun or the acne if a person’s face has got scars, wrinkles, lines or blotches then the skin of the person will feel better, look healthier and younger with laser skin resurfacing.
Layer by layer the skin is removed with precision by the laser skin resurfacing. The skin is given a younger and a tighter surface because of the formation of the cells of the new skin during the healing. This procedure can be conducted all by itself or in combination with other cosmetic surgical procedures on the person’s face.
One needs a dermatologist or consult a plastic surgeon to determine if the patient is capable of undergoing this procedure.
The patient needs to tell the concerned doctor if they have fever blisters or cold sores around their mouth.
Laser skin resurfacing can also cause breakouts in many individuals who are the most vulnerable to them.
If one still wishes to go ahead with the procedure then the doctor has to tell the patient to stop all medicines and the supplements like ibuprofen, vitamin E or aspirin ten days in advance of the surgery being performed as they can affect the clotting.
If one is a smoker, then they should stop it for at least a couple of weeks before going in for the procedure and wait for a while before starting to smoke after the procedure is done. This is because the healing process gets prolonged if a person starts smoking.
The doctor may prescribe the patient an antibiotic as a preventive measure against bacterial infection as well as an antiviral medication if the patient is vulnerable to developing the fever blisters or cold sores.
The laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure for which the patient does not have to stay overnight.
The doctors may treat the patient’s wrinkles around the regions such as the forehead, mouth or the eyes separately or may treat the entire face.
In case the procedure is to be conducted on a small area then the doctor will numb that area using the local anesthesia and also sedate the patient as well.
If the patient is to get full facial treatment, then general anesthesia will be needed to execute the laser skin resurfacing procedure.
When only small parts of the face need treatment the procedure may take 30-45 minutes for the completion of the procedure. The entire face treatment completion may take nearly 2 hours.
After the laser skin resurfacing procedure is done the treated areas will be bandaged by the doctor.
After twenty hours the patient is needed to clean the area that has been treated, 4 to 5 times in a day followed by the application of the ointment such as petroleum jelly in order to prevent the formation of scabs.
After the laser skin resurfacing is done the development of swelling is quite normal. The doctor may prescribe the patient with steroids in order to manage the swelling around the eyes. The swelling can also be eased when the patient sleeps on an extra pillow.
