The Most Popular Plastic Surgeries in the U.S
Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) suggests both minimally-invasive and invasive cosmetic procedures are surging in the United States. Since 2017, americans have undergone almost 16 million minimally-invasive procedures (i.e., lip fillers, Botox, CoolSculpting, etc.) and roughly 2 million invasive procedures (i.e., liposuction, nose jobs, and breast implants).
These are the cosmetic surgeries that are most common among Americans going under the knife:
1. Botox and Fillers
Botox (or botulinum toxin type A) as well as soft tissue type fillers are most certainly on the rise. Botox is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and although it can be a powerful poison if used incorrectly, it can be injected a number of times into certain muscles to cosmetically improve, or bulk up fine lines, crow’s feet, sunken tissues, and wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscles. Although dermal fillers are used in a similar manner, to plump lips, cheekbones, and smooth wrinkles, these injectable implants are actually FDA medically-approved device implants.
2. CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is a less invasive fat reduction procedure (compared to liposuction), which using employes cryolipolysis technology to freeze, kill, and eliminate fat cells in specifically targeted areas (i.e., belly, bra line, triceps, chin, hips, thighs, etc.). During a CoolSculpting procedure, closely controlled vacuums apply cryolipolysis at temperatures between -11 to +5 °celsius. Areas targeted with CoolSculpting experience what’s known as apoptosis (or localized cell death) followed by a local inflammatory response that gradually eliminates dead fat cells and reduces the layer of fatty tissue. Patients may experience tingling, swelling, numbness, and bruising to the targeted area for about a month following their procedure.
3. Rhinoplasty
Commonly referred to as a nose job, roughly 218,924 americans get rhinoplasty procedures yearly, for both cosmetic (to improve nose shape) and health reasons (to boost breathing function). Rhinoplasty surgery is considered invasive in nature, and aims to change the shape of the bone, skin, or cartilage (or all of the above).
4. Liposuction
Even though CoolSculpting offers a less invasive method for reducing body fat, 246,354 Americans still opt for liposuction procedures yearly. This procedure must be done under general, regional, or local anesthesia. Lipo shows the best success in patients with a healthy body weight and good skin elasticity, that are 10- to 20-pounds near their goal weight. Despite common belief, liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, but surgically removes fat for reconturing purposes only.
5. Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation, particularly breast enhancement, remains the most popular plastic surgery in the U.S., with 300,378 surgeries yearly. Breast augmentation surgically alters the shape and size of a patient’s breasts by inserting fat injections (from another area of the body) or by using saline or silicone breast implants. Breast reduction surgery, another type of breast augmentation, is also common, with roughly 112,000 breast reductions performed yearly, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
