Types of prostate cancer that you probably were never aware of
Cancer that grows in the tissue of any gland such as the prostate gland is known as adenocarcinoma. This is the type of cancer that forms most of the cases of prostate cancer. Based on how fast cancer grows in the prostate gland is how the cancer is categorized. Prostate cancer can be basically categorized into two main types – aggressive or fast-growing and non-aggressive or slow growing. As the name suggests with non-aggressive cancer the rate of growth is very slow or it simply doesn’t grow at all. Whereas with aggressive cancer, the growth is quite rapid and cancer may also spread to other parts of the body such as the bones, which can prove to be quite dangerous.
The type of cell that the cancer started in tells you what type of prostate cancer you might have. Some of the types of prostate cancer are as follows:
- Acinar adenocarcinoma
This type of cancer is formed in the gland cells that line the prostate cancer. This is the most common type of prostate cancer found and it is commonly found that nearly everyone who has prostate cancer has this type. - Ductal adenocarcinoma
This cancer starts in the cells that line the ducts of the prostate gland. Ductal adenocarcinoma tends to spread much more quickly that acinar adenocarcinoma. - Transitional or Urothelial Cancer
Transitional cancer starts in the cells that line the urethra which is the tube that carries urine to the outside of the body. This type of cancer basically starts off in the bladder and only then spreads into the prostate. But there are some rare cases when the cancer is seen to start in the prostate gland and then spread into the entrance of the bladder and its nearby tissues. - Squamous cell cancer
Squamous cells are flat cells that cover the prostate gland and in this type of cancer, this is where cancer starts. This type of cancer has the tendency to grow and spread more quickly than adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland. - Small cell prostate
This cancer is made up of small round cells and small cell prostate is a type of neuroendocrine cancer.
There are also some other kinds of rare cancers that can develop in the prostate glands like carcinoid cancer and sarcomas. Currently, researchers are working and studying prostate cancer.
It is important to treat prostate cancer as soon as you find any of the symptoms that are associated with it. Urinary symptoms are often the first to appear. But you also need to keep in mind that most of the symptoms associated with prostate cancer can also be caused by conditions that aren’t related to cancer at all. If you find blood in your urine, it is the time to call your doctor immediately. The symptoms of prostate cancer can be caused by something else, it is always safer to get it checked with your doctor.
